Cloud Computing and Education

To study the impact of cloud computing in the domain of education, it is important to know, what actually is cloud computing?

In technical terms, cloud computing is the delivery of computing services or we can say that it is a form of internet based computing, which enables us to access shared resources, information and software  as a service on our computer or mobile phones on demand. Google apps, YouTube, Twitter etc. are the examples of cloud computing.

Let us understand it better by taking the example of Gmail. We use Gmail to send and receive mails now that is a software, which is provided to us as a service, which we can access from anywhere and we do not have to store anything on our personal devices.

Indian government is making many efforts in encouraging the parents to send their children to schools and colleges. The government is also introducing various schemes and policies to promote education in India, or more precisely, digital education, but the lack of facilities, infrastructure, and good teachers affect their results and thus discourage students as well as parents to continue to send their children to schools. Cloud computing can be a solution to above-mentioned problems.

As stated earlier, cloud computing enables us to access and control data with the help of internet. There are several ways in which cloud computing is changing education. It is obvious that the university level textbooks are quite expensive and many students cannot afford to buy them. Therefore, the cloud-based textbooks can be a great solution as the digital content is very much less expensive than the printed one.

According to a study, the average social studies book in junior and elementary schools is outdated – which means that the material in those books are no longer correct or is of no use.

Cloud based materials are easy to update so that the students can always have access to current learning materials. With the help of cloud computing, it is possible to reach a large number of students. It is creating an environment where students can have access to high quality education and resources.

Cloud computing is practically implied in many colleges and schools, it is obvious that all the colleges have computer labs which are fully occupied but many colleges have lack of infrastructure in this situation cloud can be beneficial for the students in rural areas to get quality education. In recent years, all India council for technical education (AICTE) has collaborated with Microsoft Corporation India Pvt.Ltd to implement cloud in all its institutes. With the help of this collaboration, all institutions can get access to Microsoft office 365 for education.

Introducing cloud computing in education will not only benefit students, but also faculty members and educational institutes by helping to provide quality education.
